This study reports a novel mutation in the optineurin (OPTN) gene associated with aggressive amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The findings expand the genetic spectrum of ALS/FTD and suggest that OPTN mutations can lead to rapidly progressive neurodegenerative phenotypes.
